Making Use of Anecdotes in Best Man Speeches

0

Talking of the content of a best man speech, did you know the key factor that could make your speech rank above the average is about choosing the appropriately and using them wisely in your speech? So, what is an anecdote at the first place?

According to the Merriam-Webster.com the definition of anecdote is –

“a usually short narrative of an interesting, amusing, or biographical incident”

And According to Dictionary.com

“1. a short account of a particular incident or event, especially of an interesting or amusing nature.
2. a short, obscure historical or biographical account.”

So, don’t just choose stories and memories to include in your speech and share with the audience, choose anecdotes. Carefully think of the incidents that are significant in the context of the wedding, involve the groom (or may be the bride as well) and are quite amusing so that the audience find them interesting too.

If you happen to be the groom’s brother or best friend for a long time you must be having a plethora of such incidents to choose from. Since you don’t have a lot of time to narrate every single of those interesting stories, you need to be choosy while deciding which would the ones you would really like to include are. A good idea would be to include those that blend with your speech seamlessly helping your speech to become more meaningful.

Coming back to the topic of anecdotes, you could have some sleepless nights trying to figure out which are the ones that you would really want to include. And sometimes, strangely enough, you might find yourself in a situation where you couldn’t remember even a single incident that’s funny and worth mentioning. Well, in that case you could point out some of the positive traits of the groom with some examples. For instance, you could say something like, “I don’t know if you are aware of it, Jason is a great writer. He has his own blog and I don’t know how he manages to take the time of his busy schedule to write posts almost regularly. He was good at writing essays in school but never persuaded it until recently. I wonder if Catherine was his inspiration as I now remember he started blogging a couple of months after they discovered each other.”

We will discuss more about it later as now I would want you to look at a couple anecdotes first. They are not hilarious but you’ll surely appreciate the sense of humor, I hope.

When Todd and I were small boys we were neighbors in this tiny suburban town, and we stayed together at least three times a week, spending weekends at each other homes, even sharing the same bed. As little boys, it’s always good to make fun of bugs by poking their abdomens and collecting their innards. Oh, excuse me for that, Michelle. I know our childhood moments can be a little gross to you and that’s why I have decided to skip talking about high school. You wouldn’t like whatever’s on my mind right now, anyway. The point is … Todd and I have always been like brothers. When we were in college, I used to call his house when I was supposed to be calling my own mother.

Our high school was a dismal one. I don’t mean to sound bitter, but we were not as buff as we are now. We were at the bottom of the food chain, so to speak – the kind who only got a date when there was a discrepancy in the population of male and the female students. Now I’m telling you our luck was so bad that we even ended up being each other’s date in our junior prom. We got lucky in our senior year when there was a decline in the male population and the girls had no choice, but to go with us to the prom. Now looking at Sam, my friend and junior prom date, sitting happily with his beautiful bride Tina and I, being happily married myself, I can say that high school was worth it after all. If it wasn’t for those awkward years, we would not have worked as hard as we did to get to a good college and earn a degree. I would have not met my wife, and Sam would have not met Tina.

I would now now like you to watch this video. Watch how the best man blends his anecdotes in his speech seamlessly. It’s a good speech, one of the best I have watched on YouTube
